The Edward G. Schumacher Memorial Library is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving as a resource center for professionals, students, and the community as a whole.

The Edward G. Schumacher Memorial Library, a not-for-profit organization, was established in 1991. The library is located in the Academic Center at the Chicago Campus of Northwestern College. Two branch libraries are located at NC's Bridgeview and Naperville campuses. Librarians on staff are available for library instruction and individual reference assistance. The Schumacher Library is a member of the Metropolitan and DuPage Library Systems and Online Computer Learning Center (OCLC). Interlibrary loan of books and articles is available through OCLC. Intercampus loan of materials is also available.
The library subscribes to numerous databases for online research and access to full text articles and reports. These databases provide access to magazine, newspaper, and scholarly journal articles on a host of topics (EbscoHost, ProQuest Research Library, FirstSearch), medical and business information, encyclopedic entries, specialized reports (EbscoHost, Cinahl Plus With Full Text, Magill’s Medical Guide), CQ Research electronic books (Netlibrary), and law related information for legal, medical, and business research (LexisNexis Academic and Westlaw Campus).

E. G. Schumacher Memorial Library provides informational services to distance learners. The library will keep statistical counts of reference questions, loan requests, interlibrary loan and document delivery services. The library will conduct an annual library service assessment for distance learners. While the library strives to provide distance learners with superior library service, supplemental regional public and academic information resources are encouraged to increase user convenience.
- Email reference question responses will be made within 48 hours.
- Email requests for NC owned periodical articles will be scanned and sent as PDF files within copyright restrictions within 48 hours.
- Email requests for NC owned book material (on shelf) will be shipped in U.S. mail within 48 hours. Materials will be returned to the NC library within the assigned loan period at the user’s expense. Tracking is recommended. Unreturned and lost items are the user’s responsibility. The library maintains the right to charge users fees for unreturned items and hold grades or transcripts.
- Email requests for document delivery (unreturnables) not owned by the library will be submitted to OCLC within 48 hours. Articles will be scanned and emailed to distance learner on receipt within copyright restrictions.
- Email requests for books (returnables) not owned by the library will be submitted to OCLC within 48 hours. Materials will be shipped to distance learner on receipt. Materials will be returned to NC within the specified loan period at the user’s expense. Tracking is recommended. Unreturned and lost items are the user’s responsibility. The library maintains the right to charge users fee for unreturned items and hold grades or transcripts.

Ten cents per day; maximum late fee is $10. The library accepts only cash for payment of lost materials or late fees. Periodicals, reference, and reserve materials do not circulate. Photocopies are available at a cost of ten cents per page.
*Student ID is required to check out materials. All materials are due at the end of the current quarter. Students with outstanding materials will have their grades held. The cost of materials not returned by the end of the following quarter will be added to tuition.
